A message from the president

Dear Members, Community Partners, and Visitors,

Welcome to the Portland NAACP Branch 1120B website.

I am pleased to share that our website has been restored following the resolution of technical and administrative issues that temporarily interrupted its availability. Our website serves as an important connection between the Branch, our members, and the broader community, and I appreciate your patience while we worked to restore this important resource.

For those who may not yet be aware, my name is Shawn M. Flynn, and I currently serve as President of NAACP Portland Branch 1120B. I assumed this responsibility following a leadership transition from my previous position as First Vice President.

I recognize that this transition may be new information for some of our members and community partners. Leadership changes can naturally raise questions about an organization's direction, priorities, and continuity. My commitment is to provide steady, principled leadership while ensuring that our Branch remains focused on the mission that has guided the NAACP for more than a century.

That mission—advancing civil rights, promoting equity, protecting equal opportunity, and advocating for justice—remains unchanged.

Leadership Grounded in Integrity

Throughout my experience in military, business, and nonprofit leadership, I have embraced a principle that continues to guide my approach to service:

Leadership Requires Consistent Integrity.

To me, that means doing what is right even when circumstances are difficult, applying standards fairly and consistently, acknowledging challenges openly, and recognizing that leadership is a responsibility entrusted to us rather than a position of personal privilege.

It also means understanding that transparency, accountability, and mutual respect are not simply organizational ideals. They must be reflected in how we communicate, make decisions, resolve disagreements, and serve our members.

As President, I am committed to strengthening those principles within our Branch.

Strengthening Our Foundation

Portland has a proud history of civil rights advocacy, community organizing, and collective action. Our Branch is part of that legacy, built through the dedication of generations of members, volunteers, officers, community partners, and advocates.

We honor that history not simply by remembering it, but by continuing the work.

Moving forward, my priorities include strengthening membership engagement and retention, improving communication, reinforcing financial and organizational accountability, supporting our committees, developing emerging leaders, and expanding meaningful opportunities for community participation.

I believe that strong governance makes strong advocacy possible.

An effective Branch must be organized, accountable, accessible, and responsive to the people it serves. When we strengthen our internal foundation, we strengthen our ability to advocate for justice beyond our organization.

Investing in Our Youth and Preparing for the Future

One of my highest priorities is investing in our youth and ensuring they are prepared not only to participate in the future, but to help shape it.

Our NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) program represents an important opportunity to recognize, nurture, and celebrate the academic, artistic, scientific, and technological talents of young people.

I want to strengthen our commitment to ACT-SO while developing meaningful partnerships with youth-led organizations, educators, technology professionals, businesses, and community institutions throughout Portland.

We are living through an extraordinary period of technological transformation. Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping education, employment, business, and nearly every aspect of our society.

While these advances present tremendous opportunities, they also carry the risk of widening existing disparities and leaving too many young people behind, particularly those who have historically faced barriers to educational resources, technology, and economic opportunity.

We cannot afford to allow the next generation to become spectators in an AI-driven world. We must help prepare them to become its innovators, creators, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

That means working collaboratively to expand access to digital literacy, AI education, mentorship, STEM opportunities, and the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly technology-driven economy.

It also means ensuring that young people have a meaningful voice in shaping the programs and opportunities intended to serve them.

My vision is for the Portland NAACP to become an active partner in bringing together youth-led organizations, educational institutions, community advocates, and industry leaders to help close emerging opportunity gaps before they become entrenched inequities.

We must approach this work with both urgency and intention, recognizing that access to emerging technologies, educational opportunities, and economic participation is increasingly a matter of equity and civil rights.

Our responsibility is not simply to prepare young people for the world as it exists today, but to help equip them to lead in the world that is emerging.

Unity With Purpose

Like any organization composed of individuals who care deeply about its mission, we will sometimes have different perspectives about the best path forward.

Disagreement is inevitable. Division does not have to be.

We can challenge ideas without diminishing one another. We can insist upon accountability while respecting due process. We can acknowledge our challenges without allowing them to define our future.

Unity does not require uniformity. It requires a shared commitment to something greater than ourselves.

For the Portland NAACP, that commitment is to the people and communities who depend upon our advocacy.

Moving Forward Together

As we look ahead, I encourage every member to remain engaged, every volunteer to recognize the value of their service, and every community partner to continue working alongside us.

I particularly encourage young people, youth-led organizations, educators, and those working at the intersection of technology and opportunity to connect with our Branch. The challenges and possibilities ahead require collaboration, fresh perspectives, and a willingness to build something meaningful together.

Our strength has never rested in one President, one Executive Committee, or one generation of leadership.

It rests in the collective determination of people who believe that justice, equality, dignity, and opportunity should be available to everyone.

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your President, and I approach this responsibility with humility, determination, and respect for the legacy entrusted to us.

My goal is straightforward: to help leave this Branch stronger, more accountable, more engaged, and better positioned to serve the generations who follow us.

Thank you for your continued support of the Portland NAACP and for your commitment to the work that brings us together.

Our mission continues. Our work continues. And together, we move forward.
